Paris vignettes - 2 poems
55The Jardin de Luxembourg
Best in the winter
With a lush cover of snow
The donkey carts
The children full of joy
And then in summer
The tables dappled with sunshine
Through the leaves
Of the sycamore trees
As I write a letter home
And then to the palais
So ornate
So finely appointed
The senate chambers
Where once lived kings and queens
But I shall remember best
The children riding the donkey carts
And their glee
One snow-brimmed day in Paris
The Eiffel Tower
But I first saw it
As a Christmas tree
Shining and giving light
The winter I embarked
On my expedition to Paris
And it backoned me
As I entreed by the Seine
From the north
Sur bateau bleu
So overwhelming
An exquisite structure
Humorous and gay
Witty and elegant
To the top
With a Swiss friend
In a lightning storm
All the more dramatic
Touristic
But then we were tourists
Il vaut le coup!

Your poetry is so evocatively sublime... so sublimely evocative. I think it was Doug the other day, who said your poetry makes him want to travel... and I am only just across le Manche, and haven't been to Paris for years. You bring that lovely city to our doorsteps.
